What Does the Biblical Account of Water Turning into Blood Before Pharaoh Teach Us?

Paul

This biblical account teaches us spiritual vigilance and how to discern God's truth from the devil's counterfeits. The outward resemblance between the actions of the Lord's servants and the magicians warns every believer against blind trust in supernatural manifestations. The story of the first plague in Egypt reveals how the enemy uses imitation to soothe a person's conscience and prevent them from submitting to the Creator.

The Context of the First Plague upon Egypt

When the Lord sent Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh, He struck at the nation's greatest sanctuary: the Nile River. For the Egyptians, the Nile was a deity, the source of abundance, fertility, and life. Turning the water into blood was a judgment against false gods and an exposure of human pride. God clearly declared His sovereign authority:

“Thus says the Lord: ‘By this you shall know that I am the Lord: behold, I will strike the waters which are in the river with the rod that is in my hand, and they shall be turned to blood.’” Ex 7:17

However, the ruler of Egypt’s reaction was tragic due to the interference of dark powers:

“Then the magicians of Egypt did so with their enchantments; and Pharaoh’s heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, as the Lord had said.” Ex 7:22

Not Every Supernatural Miracle Comes from God

The primary lesson is that the presence of power does not equate to the presence of God. Satan possesses the ability to deceive the senses, exploit natural knowledge, and work through servants of darkness to produce an illusion of power. The sole purpose of the magicians was to provide Pharaoh with an excuse to rebel against the Most High.

Jesus Christ warned that before His Second Coming, this strategy would reach its peak:

“For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.” Matt 24:24

Signs and wonders in themselves are not the standard of truth. Any phenomenon must be evaluated not by its spectacle, but by its fruits and fidelity to God's Word.

An Imitation Can Multiply Trouble, but It Cannot Heal It

It is worth noting a striking fact: the Egyptian sorcerers were able to turn water into blood, but they could not cleanse it. They merely multiplied the suffering of their own people. The power of darkness always brings destruction, even when it attempts to look convincing.

Ellen White, in the book Patriarchs and Prophets, notes that the magicians did not perform a genuine miracle, but used Satan’s deceptive influence. They could not stop the plague or restore freshness to the river, for the enemy possesses no life-giving power. Only God could bring an end to His judgment, and that occurred when seven days had passed (Ex 7:25).

How a Counterfeit Blinds the Heart

The enemy of human souls does not need to invent something completely different; creating a nearly exact counterfeit is enough. When Pharaoh saw the deeds of the magicians, he quieted his conscience: if my servants can do the same, then the God of Israel has no absolute authority over me. This led to the hardening of his heart.

Today, we encounter counterfeits of a different sort: formal religion devoid of godly power, emotional excitement in place of repentance, or the excusing of sin instead of obedience to God's Law. The apostle Paul calls us to be especially mindful of what guides our spiritual life:

“The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders.” 2 Thess 2:9

Practical Application for the Modern Christian

This biblical narrative calls each of us to build our faith not on impressions, mystical experiences, or human authorities, but solely on the revealed Word of God:

“To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” Isa 8:20

When complex questions arise in your life, or when you are tempted to take the easier path, ask yourself: where is this influence leading? Does it inspire humility, repentance, and obedience to all of God's commandments, or does it instead reassure me in disobedience? Remember that only the Lord is able to bring true healing and salvation, whereas the enemy offers only dangerous illusions that destroy the soul.
