Why Does Predation Exist in Nature?

3 min read
Paul

Cruelty in the animal kingdom was not part of God’s original design. Death, fear, and predation emerged as a tragic consequence of the Fall, which distorted the pristine harmony of Eden. Watching stronger beasts mercilessly tear apart the weak stirs within us an instinctive protest. This ache is natural, for our conscience whispers: the world was never meant to be this way. The Bible openly reveals that nature's current state is far from what the Creator originally intended.

The Original Diet of All Creation

Holy Scripture clearly testifies that in the beginning, God did not create predators. In a perfect world, life was sustained without violence or the shedding of blood. Animals had no need to hunt to survive, as the Creator provided an abundance of plant food for everyone.

“And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so. Gen 1:30

Having finished creation, the Lord declared everything to be “very good.” In this state, there was no room for agony, no prey trembling before a hunter, no desperate struggle for survival. Life dwelt in absolute security and peace.

How Sin Distorted Nature

Man was appointed as the ruler and steward of the earthly realm. When Adam chose rebellion against God, the catastrophic consequences of that choice fell upon all creation. The earth lost its original protection and blessing.

“We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.” Rom 8:22

Ellen White notes in the book Patriarchs and Prophets that after the Fall, not only man, but all of nature felt the curse of sin. Beasts lost their trust in mankind, and enmity, ferocity, and the impulse to kill arose among them. What we refer to today as a predatory ecosystem or the mechanism of natural selection is merely an emergency survival mode in a world fractured and decaying under the weight of sin.

The Prophecy of Restored Peace

God has never abandoned His purpose to restore the world to its pristine, perfect state. The Old Testament prophets describe a day when hostility between living creatures will cease forever, and predation will vanish entirely.

“The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them. The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox.” Isa 11:6-7

These verses prove that predation is not an eternal law of the universe. It is a temporary anomaly. God is able to return animals to their original nature, where even the lion will feed on plant life.

Practical Meaning for Our Lives

Recognizing that predation is a consequence of sin reshapes how we view the world and our Creator. God is not to blame for the suffering of animals; He grieves alongside His creation as He witnesses the fallout of the Fall.

As Christians, we are called to reflect God’s care for the world around us today. We ought to treat animals with compassion, never inflicting unnecessary pain, remembering that a righteous person cares for the life of their beast. The hope of a new world sustains us as we await the ultimate liberation of all the earth from the bondage of decay and death.
