What Jesus Revealed About His Second Coming

5 min read
Paul

The theme of the Second Coming occupies a central place in the teachings of Jesus Christ. He not only spoke of salvation and the Kingdom of God, but also gave a clear promise that He would one day return. For the disciples, this was a vital comfort and hope, and for all believers, it became the foundation of Christian hope. In the Gospels, Jesus explained in detail what His return would be like, what events would precede it, and how those awaiting Him ought to live.

Jesus Clearly Promised That He Would Return

Before His passion, Christ comforted His disciples, who were troubled by the thought of His departure. He gave them a promise that has become one of the most precious hopes of Christianity:

“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” (John 14:3)

These words show that the return of Christ is neither a symbolic idea nor a spiritual metaphor. Jesus was speaking of a real event, when He will come again to gather His people. His purpose is to bring the redeemed into the eternal Kingdom of God.

Ellen White also emphasized this hope. She wrote that the Second Coming will be the culmination of the plan of salvation and the fulfillment of God’s promises. In the book The Great Controversy, she notes that Christ’s return will be the most magnificent event in human history, when the Lord appears in glory to deliver His people.

His Coming Will Be Visible and Glorious

Jesus clearly explained that His return will be a worldwide and unmistakable event. It will not happen secretly or unnoticed.

“Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.” (Matthew 24:30)

The Bible also confirms this truth in other passages. For instance:

“Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him.” (Revelation 1:7)

This means that the Second Coming will be a global event seen by all people. Christ will come in the glory of the Father, accompanied by angels. His return will be the moment of the ultimate triumph of God’s justice and love.

Jesus Spoke of the Signs Preceding His Return

In the Olivet Discourse, Christ answered the disciples’ question concerning the signs of the end of the age. In Matthew 24, as well as Mark 13 and Luke 21, He listed the events that would unfold prior to His coming.

He spoke of wars and rumors of wars, natural disasters, famines, and earthquakes. Christ also warned of spiritual dangers—the rise of false christs, false prophets, and the increase of lawlessness.

Yet, amid these troubling signs, Jesus also gave a crucial prophecy filled with hope:

“And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.” (Matthew 24:14)

This demonstrates that God’s mission encompasses the proclamation of the Gospel throughout the entire world. Before the end of history, every nation will have the opportunity to hear the message of salvation.

No One Knows the Exact Day

Although Christ provided the signs of His return, He also stated plainly that human beings cannot know the exact date of this event.

“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.” (Matthew 24:36)

This warning safeguards believers against false predictions and attempts to calculate the precise time of the end. Throughout history, many have tried to set a date for the Second Coming, but the words of Jesus show that such an approach contradicts His teaching.

A Christian is called not to calculate dates, but to live in continual spiritual readiness.

Believers Must Watch and Be Ready

After explaining the signs, Jesus repeatedly gave the call to watch.

“Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming.” (Matthew 24:42)

To illustrate this point, Christ shared several parables: the ten virgins, the talents, and the faithful and unfaithful servants. All of them convey one vital truth: waiting for the Second Coming must be expressed in faithfulness to God and service to others.

Watching means living a vibrant spiritual life, trusting God, obeying His commandments, and being ready to meet Christ at any moment.

The Apostle Paul later described what will take place at that moment:

“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.” (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17)

Conclusion

Jesus’ teaching about the Second Coming is filled with hope. He promised that He will one day return to put an end to sin, suffering, and death. His return will be a glorious, visible, and worldwide event. Various signs will precede it, yet the exact day remains known only to God.

Christ’s central appeal is to live in readiness. This means strengthening our relationship with God daily, trusting His Word, and taking part in sharing the Gospel.

In practical terms, we can live this out by dedicating time to prayer and Bible study, growing in faith and character, serving those around us, and remembering that the history of this world is moving toward an encounter with Christ. The hope of His return enables a Christian to live with confidence, purpose, and an eager anticipation of God’s coming Kingdom.
