How Will the Mortal Body Put On Immortality?

4 min read
Paul

The mortal body will put on immortality not through a natural process, but by the creative power of God. We do not know all the physical details of the resurrection, yet Holy Scripture reassures us: the One who created man and sustains life is able to completely renew him at the return of Christ.

The Apostle Paul does not attempt to explain the mechanism of this future transformation using the language of biology or physics. He proclaims its reality and its source: it will be an act of God. Mortality was not the Creator’s original plan for humanity. It entered the world through sin, when Adam and Eve separated themselves from God, the only Source of life.

From Life in Eden to Mortality

In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve were real people with real bodies. They had access to the tree of life, which was a sign of God's continual gift of life. However, disobedience changed their condition: sin brought fear, shame, alienation, and the beginning of decay.

“And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, ‘Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.’” Gen 2:16–17

Death did not necessarily mean that they would fall dead that very moment. On the day of the Fall, they suffered spiritual death: a rupture of fellowship with God, and they also became mortal. Ever since, humanity has lived under the reign of aging, disease, and death. God closed the way to the tree of life not out of cruelty, but so that sinful man would not live forever in his fallen state.

“Then the Lord God said, ‘Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever...’” Gen 3:22–24

God Can Reverse the Transformation

If separation from the Source of life brought decay, then returning to God through Christ leads to life. This does not mean that the saved become immortal on their own. Immortality belongs to God, and human beings receive it as a gift through Jesus Christ.

“For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.” 1 Cor 15:53

Paul is not speaking about the soul escaping the body, but about the resurrection and transformation of the whole person. Christ will not merely give His children a different kind of existence: He will raise the dead and transform those who await Him alive. The body will be real, yet imperishable, free from disease, sin, and death.

“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.” 1 Thess 4:16–17

The Power of the Resurrection Is at Work in Us Now

For a Christian, the essential question is not only: “How will God transform my body in the future?” Even more important is this: “Am I allowing God to transform me today?” The very same power of the Holy Spirit that raised Jesus gives the believer victory over sin, the strength to serve, to forgive, to surrender selfishness, and to live a new life.

“But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.” Rom 8:11

Spiritual renewal does not replace the future bodily resurrection, but it is its foretaste and assurance. When Christ frees a person from guilt, restores their character, and awakens a love for goodness, He demonstrates that His power is stronger than the ruin of sin.

A Hope Grounded in Christ

Our hope is anchored not in human ability to grasp every detail, but in the resurrection of Jesus. He genuinely conquered death, and therefore His promise to raise His people is steadfast. Ellen White emphasized that the resurrection of Christ is the pledge of the resurrection of all who sleep in Him.

“And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Rev 21:4

Therefore, it is not difficult for God to raise the dust and clothe the mortal with immortality. Entrust your life to Him practically today: ask the Holy Spirit to revive your faith, grant victory over known sin, and prepare you to meet Christ. The One who transforms the heart now will complete His work on the day of resurrection.
