What will the Second Coming of Jesus Christ be like?

3 min read
Paul

The Second Coming of Jesus Christ is the culmination of the biblical plan of salvation and the heart of Christian hope. Holy Scripture reveals the return of the Savior not as a mystical symbol or a secret event, but as a solemn finale to the world's history of the great controversy between good and evil, visible to all humanity.

The very name of the Seventh-day Adventist Church points to the anticipation of this great moment. The word “Advent” comes from a Latin root meaning arrival or coming. This hope provides modern people with a firm anchor amidst chaos, wars, disease, and moral decline. Our expectation is grounded in the direct promise of the Lord Himself, Who assured His disciples of the reality of His return:

“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” John 14:3
The Nature of the Second Coming: Visible, Audible, and Glorious

The Bible leaves no room for the popular theory of the so-called “secret rapture” of the church. Scripture clearly states that Christ's return will be seen by every inhabitant of our planet. It will be a global event accompanied by heavenly glory, the sound of God's trumpet, and the appearance of the angelic hosts. Just as Jesus ascended to heaven in a literal, physical body, so will He return:
“Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.” Rev 1:7
The Apostle Paul also emphasizes the majestic scale of this event, describing the resurrection of the righteous:
“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.” 1 Thess 4:16
At that moment, the righteous who were resting in the dust of the earth will arise in incorruptible bodies, and the living faithful will be transformed and caught up together with them to meet the Savior. For an unrepentant world, this day will be one of terror and judgment, while for God's people it will be a celebration of deliverance.

The Context of the Three Angels' Messages and the Investigative Judgment

In the book of Revelation, the anticipation of the coming is inextricably linked with the final warning to the inhabitants of the earth. The Adventist understanding of prophecy emphasizes that right before Christ's return, the High Priest's ministry in the heavenly sanctuary—known as the investigative judgment—is being accomplished. The Three Angels' Messages call humanity to turn their attention to God the Creator, reject the deceptions of Babylon, and receive the righteousness of Christ:
“Saying with a loud voice, ‘Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water.’” Rev 14:7
Ellen White, in the book The Great Controversy, points out that the judgment which began in heaven determines the eternal destiny of every soul before Christ appears on the clouds of glory. Therefore, the period prior to the Second Coming is a time of special spiritual preparation, when believers are invited to engage in deep heart-searching, receive the seal of the living God, and be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit represented by the latter rain.

Practical Readiness: Watching and Doing

Waiting for the Second Coming has nothing to do with passive observation or calculating exact dates. The Savior Himself warned His followers against attempting to set days and hours. True biblical expectation always motivates active ministry and mission:
“Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming.” Matt 24:42
Being ready means dwelling in daily communion with Christ through prayer and the study of God's Word. It is a life of faith manifested in acts of mercy, preaching the Gospel, and keeping God's commandments. When this blessed hope lives in the heart, life takes on eternal significance, and all earthly anxieties lose their destructive power.
