When did the stone strike the mountain in the prophecy of Daniel 2:45?

4 min read
Paul

The stone was cut out of the mountain during the era of the divided kingdoms, that is, during the period of the image's feet and toes. This prophetic vision from the second chapter of the Book of Daniel reveals the culmination of human history and points to the ultimate establishment of God's eternal Kingdom through the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

In King Nebuchadnezzar's prophetic dream, the world's great empires succeed one another. The head of gold represents Babylon, the chest and arms of silver point to Medo-Persia, the belly of bronze symbolizes Greece, and the legs of iron depict mighty Rome. However, after the iron empire came the era of the feet and toes made of iron and clay, symbolizing a politically divided Europe following the fall of the Roman Empire. It is precisely during this final stretch of history that the mysterious stone appears.

The Meaning of the Phrase "Cut Out Without Hands"

Holy Scripture places special emphasis on the supernatural origin of this stone. Humanity has nothing to do with its appearance, highlighting the Creator's absolute sovereignty in bringing earthly history to its close.

“You watched while a stone was cut out without hands, which struck the image on its feet of iron and clay, and broke them in pieces.” Dan 2:34
The stone is not the result of human evolution, social reforms, or political victories. The phrase points to direct divine intervention. Earthly kingdoms were built through weapons, warfare, and intrigue, but the Kingdom of Christ arises solely through the power of the Almighty. The prophet Daniel explains this directly to the king:
“Inasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold—the great God has made known to the king what will come to pass after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation is sure.” Dan 2:45
The Chronological Point: Exactly When the Stone Strikes

To understand when the stone is cut out and strikes the image, we must pay attention to the point of impact. It strikes neither the golden head of Babylon, nor the silver chest of Persia, nor even the iron legs of undivided Rome. The blow lands directly on the feet with their toes of iron and clay.
“And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever.” Dan 2:44
The phrase “in the days of these kings” clearly shows that the devastating strike of the stone takes place during the existence of the divided nations into which Rome fractured. Christ's First Coming occurred when imperial, iron Rome ruled the world undivided. At that time, the Lord came as the humble Lamb to offer Himself as a sacrifice for the salvation of humanity. He did not destroy earthly empires back then; rather, He proclaimed the kingdom of grace within the hearts of believers. Therefore, the stone striking the feet of the image symbolizes not the First, but the Second Coming of the Savior in glory.

The Complete Disappearance of Earthly Empires and the Triumph of Christ

When the stone strikes the image, the results are final and irreversible. All remnants of proud human dominion are pulverized into dust.
“Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were crushed together, and became like chaff from the summer threshing floors; the wind carried them away so that no trace of them was found. And the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.” Dan 2:35
This event marks the end of the era of global conflict and sin. The Book of Revelation paints this very climax of history with the same prophetic hues:
“Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, ‘The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!’” Rev 11:15
In the writings of Ellen White, who possessed the gift of prophecy, the thought is repeatedly emphasized that the entire history of our world is marching toward this grand finale. She wrote that the rulers of nations occupy their place on the stage of time by the permission of Heaven, yet soon all earthly grandeur will fall before the glory of the coming King of kings.

The Practical Significance of the Prophecy for Our Lives

Realizing that we are living in the days of the “toes of the image” urges us to be sober and watchful. We stand at the very edge of prophetic time. Earthly riches, political systems, and temporal power will soon vanish like chaff in the wind. The only secure foundation for our lives is Jesus Christ Himself, the Chief Cornerstone of salvation. Today, every person faces a personal choice: either to allow their proud heart to fall on this Stone and be broken in repentance now, or to be crushed by It in judgment when He returns to judge the universe.
