Does Ellen White write that Satan gives people talents?
Ellen White teaches that God is the source of all talents, while Satan merely distorts and abuses them. Adventist theology and the Lord's messenger consistently emphasize: the Creator, the source of life, and the origin of every ability is exclusively God. The devil is a created being, a rebel who has no power to create out of nothing or bestow genuine natural or spiritual gifts. His primary strategy is not to create talents, but to twist, defile, and subjugate what the Heavenly Father has already generously bestowed upon humanity.
The Biblical Source of All Human Gifts
Holy Scripture categorically affirms that every ability or blessing comes exclusively from God. Man has nothing of his own that was not received from the hands of the Creator.
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” Jas 1:17The Apostle Paul reminds believers of their complete dependence on the Lord regarding any advantages:
“For who makes you differ from another? And what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?” 1 Cor 4:7In the book Christ’s Object Lessons, Ellen White provides a detailed exposition of the parable of the talents from Matthew 25. She highlights that the talents represent the special gifts of the Spirit alongside natural abilities: intellect, speech, influence, time, skill, health, and material resources. All these attributes are entrusted to humanity by the Lord to serve others and glorify the Creator's name.
How Satan Uses and Perverts God's Gifts
Although Satan is not the author of human abilities, he exerts tremendous effort to take possession of the human mind and direct these entrusted gifts down the path of selfishness, pride, and rebellion. Ellen White repeatedly warns: when a talented person does not surrender their heart to Christ, their gift becomes an instrument of destruction.
This is manifested with particular clarity in the realm of intellect, eloquence, music, and the arts. Satan flatters human self-esteem, inspires the idea of one's own superiority, and prompts individuals to use vocal power or creative genius to seduce others, promote sin, or exalt the self. In such cases, the gift remains divine in its origin, but it becomes defiled because it has been dedicated to the service of darkness.
Occult Manifestations and the Demonic Counterfeit of Power
Sometimes people mistake supernatural manipulations or occult abilities for “talents from the devil.” Here it is vital to distinguish between a person's creative and practical abilities and demonic influence. Satan can indeed endow his agents with deceptive power, counterfeit miracles, and the ability to lead people into hypnotic or spiritistic deception.
“And no wonder, for Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.” 2 Cor 11:14–15This power has nothing to do with genuine talent, as it is the fruit of deception aimed at destroying faith in God’s Truth. Spiritistic manifestations, extrasensory phenomena, and false prophecies are the result of direct demonic activity, not genuine human creative capacities.
A Practical Conclusion for the Christian
From the perspective of Ellen White’s writings, the phrase “he has a talent from the evil one” is doctrinally incorrect. It is far more accurate to ask another question: whom does this God-given gift serve today? Any keen intellect, charisma, artistic endowment, or leadership trait can be used by Christ for the salvation of souls, or appropriated by the enemy to spread darkness.
Every Christian should daily bring each of their gifts to the feet of Jesus Christ. The realization that every talent is God's property shields us from pride, motivates us to develop our endowed abilities in purity, and directs them toward unselfish service to the church and society.
