What helps us not to break down when we feel we have no strength left?
When it feels like all our strength is gone, God does not leave His children alone with their pain. Hope in Him, prayer, and remembering His past help give us the strength to endure even in the darkest moments.
The Apostle Paul knew despair all too well. He faced dangers, persecutions, and situations where human strength was simply not enough. Yet it was in those very trials that he learned not to rely on himself, but to trust in God. The Lord does not always take away the trial immediately, but He can always sustain a person through it.
“He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us” 2 Cor 1:10
Do Not Carry Your Burden Alone
When a person is exhausted, their thoughts often fixate entirely on the problem: “I can’t handle this,” “This will never end,” “I have no strength left.” Such thoughts can feel very real, but they do not represent the whole reality. God is right there beside you—He sees your pain, hears your prayer, and knows the limits of what you can bear.
The Bible does not promise a life free of sorrow, but it does promise God’s presence in the midst of sorrow. The Lord is not a distant Observer, but a close Defender. He is especially near when the heart is broken and we do not know what to do next.
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” Ps 46:1
Draw Near to God in Suffering
When a child is afraid, they do not run away from loving parents; they cling to them even more tightly. In the same way, God invites us not to pull away from Him during trials. Sometimes people give up not because God has stopped loving or sustaining them, but because in their despair they stop seeking Him, withdraw into themselves, lose trust, and look only at the waves of their problems.
Drawing near to God means praying simply and sincerely, even when you have no eloquent words. It means reading His Word, seeking support from fellow believers, not being ashamed of tears, and acknowledging your weakness. God never turns away anyone who comes to Him out of strength.
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” 1 Pet 5:7
Remembering Past Experiences Strengthens Faith
It is deeply important to remember how God has led us in the past. Perhaps at one time it seemed that a certain illness, financial crisis, conflict, or loss would completely break us. Yet the Lord gave us the strength to make it through. He sent the right people, opened a way forward, granted peace, or simply sustained us day by day.
Past experiences do not mean there will be no future difficulties. But they testify that God was faithful yesterday, and therefore He can be trusted today and tomorrow. This is precisely how Paul speaks of the Lord: He delivered, He delivers, and He will deliver again. This is not merely a memory of the past, but a living hope for the future.
Ellen White repeatedly reminded us that we have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us in our past history. Such remembrance turns the hardships we have endured into testimonies of God’s faithfulness.
Hope Does Not Depend on Our Feelings
At times, a believer may not feel God’s nearness. That does not mean God has walked away. Feelings fluctuate due to fatigue, pain, anxiety, or depression, but God’s promises remain unshakable. Hope in God is not a denial of pain; it is a decision to hold on to His word in the midst of the pain.
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” Isa 41:10
A Practical Step for Today
If you are struggling, do not try to overcome everything all at once. Today, tell God in prayer about your fear and ask for strength just for the very next step. Recall or write down three times when the Lord has already helped you. Read 2 Corinthians 1:10 and say to yourself: “The One who sustained me before will not abandon me now.” Draw near to God especially when you feel most like giving up: He is faithful, He is near, and He gives the strength not to break.
