What Ellen White Says About Demons
Ellen White's teachings about demons are grounded in the biblical understanding of the great controversy between Christ and Satan. In her writings, she emphasizes that demons are real, intelligent beings, not merely symbolic personifications of evil or psychological disorders. According to the Bible and the writings of Ellen White, demons are fallen angels who rebelled against God in heaven alongside Lucifer and were cast down to the earth. Today, they are actively engaged in spiritual warfare, seeking to turn humanity away from salvation through Christ.
The Origin and Nature of Unclean Spirits
Sacred Scripture reveals that evil spirits have a heavenly origin, but they forfeited their pristine state through rebellion. The apostle John describes this heavenly event in symbolic language:
“So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.” Rev. 12:9Ellen White explains in the book The Great Controversy that demons are completely subject to Satan. They operate in an organized and purposeful manner. They retain high intellectual capacities, but their will is wholly corrupted by sin and hatred toward God and humanity. Our struggle has a supernatural dimension, as the apostle Paul warned:
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Eph. 6:12The Primary Strategy of Evil: Deception Through Spiritualism
Ellen White sees the greatest danger not in the overt cruelty of demons, but in their ability to disguise themselves. They often take on the appearance of beings of light, capable of working supernatural signs. Paul writes about this with complete clarity:
“And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.” 2 Cor. 11:14According to Ellen White, in the end times demonic forces will operate through modern spiritualism. They will assume the likeness of deceased relatives, friends, or even biblical saints. The purpose of this masquerade is to convince people of the immortality of the soul and to undermine the authority of the Word of God. She cautions that these spirits will appeal to the tenderest human emotions and will perform counterfeit miracles of healing. Yet the only shield against this deception is the biblical teaching regarding the state of the dead, which affirms that the dead remain in an unconscious sleep until the resurrection and know nothing of events taking place under the sun.
Demonic Signs in the Last Days
The Book of Revelation prophesies that before the Second Coming of Christ, the influence of evil spirits will become global. They will influence world leaders and religious confederacies:
“For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.” Rev. 16:14Ellen White explains that false religious movements built upon emotional excitement and miracles apart from obedience to the Law of God will provide fertile ground for the working of unclean spirits. When a person rejects the plain truth of the Bible, their mind becomes vulnerable to demonic suggestion. Demons seek to persuade the world that keeping God's commandments—especially the Sabbath—is unnecessary, offering instead a false unity under the guise of love and spiritual power.
Christ, the Victor Over Darkness and Our Protection
A Christian does not need to live in fear of demons. The earthly ministry of Jesus Christ demonstrated His absolute authority over demonic forces. When the Savior commanded them, evil spirits were compelled to obey and depart from possessed individuals. The apostle James left a practical counsel for every believer:
“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” James 4:7Ellen White highlights the wonderful truth that the weakest soul who seeks refuge in Jesus Christ is in absolute safety. All the host of Satan trembles before the name of the crucified and risen Savior. God's angels, who excel in strength far beyond demons, encamp around and guard every person who trusts in God.
Practical Protection for Today
To avoid falling prey to demonic influence, a Christian must abide daily in the Word of God. Ellen White urges us to test every supernatural phenomenon, spiritual experience, or teaching by the biblical standard: “To the law and to the testimony.” It is essential to avoid any contact with the occult, horoscopes, séances, or mediums. Total surrender of the will to Christ, heartfelt prayer, and filling the mind with biblical truth make a person an impregnable fortress against any of the wiles of Satan and his fallen angels.
