What does "the old has passed away" mean in 2 Cor 5:17?
“The old has passed away” means that a person's former state without Christ has lost its power over them. The Greek word παρῆλθεν (parēlthen) does not literally mean “died,” but conveys the idea: “passed away, went by, departed, ceased to be the present defining reality.”
The Apostle Paul is not speaking about erasing memory, denying historical facts, or an instant sinlessness of the Christian. This is about a radical change of standing: a person who is in Christ no longer belongs to the old life as their master. Their past may be part of their biography, but it is no longer their final verdict, identity, or destiny.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Cor 5:17
What does the Greek word παρῆλθεν mean?
The verb παρῆλθεν comes from παρέρχομαι: “to pass by,” “to pass away,” “to depart.” In the form Paul used, it indicates a completed action: the old has “passed away” as the dominant era of one's life. It is not a term for physical death; for “to die,” the Greek of the New Testament usually employs other words. Nor does it mean that the old has merely disappeared temporarily and will inevitably return.
Paul proclaims that through union with Christ, the former order of existence has come to an end: living under the condemnation of sin, alienation from God, self-justification, and the slavery of old desires. Now the Christian belongs to Christ and lives within the realm of His grace.
What exactly is “the old”?
“The old” includes not only obvious sinful deeds. It is also the old way of thinking: living for oneself, seeking worth apart from God, relying on one's own righteousness, or allowing guilt to rule the heart. Prior to conversion, a person may be moral, religious, or outwardly successful, but without Christ, they still need a new heart.
“Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.” Rom 6:6
Here it is important to note: that the “old man” was crucified with Christ does not mean that the believer no longer experiences temptation or struggle. It means that sin no longer has a legal right to reign as king. Christ gives the power to renounce the old ways and daily choose obedience to Him.
The new life: a gift and a process
The new creation does not begin with human willpower, but with God’s action. God reconciles the sinner to Himself through the sacrifice of Jesus, forgives them, and gives them a new belonging. At the same time, sanctification continues throughout life: the Lord progressively renews character, thoughts, habits, and relationships.
“Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” John 8:36
Ellen White explained that conversion is not merely a change of beliefs or an emotional experience. It is the surrender of the heart to Christ, as a result of which He forms new desires and a new life within the person. Therefore, genuine faith does not hide behind the words “I have changed,” but steadily bears the fruit of love, purity, mercy, and obedience.
The past is forgiven, but responsibility remains
The phrase “the old has passed away” does not eliminate the need to make right what can be made right. If a person has caused harm, they should ask for forgiveness, repay debts, restore integrity, and accept the consequences of their actions. But they do not have to live in despair, as if their fall were stronger than Christ’s grace.
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9
God does not call evil good, but He is able to forgive, cleanse, and restore anyone who comes to Him in faith. In Christ, the past is not denied. It is redeemed by God’s mercy.
Conclusion and practical application
“The old has passed away”: this is not the word “to die” in a narrow sense, nor is it a mere passing mention that something once went by. It is a declaration: the old life no longer has ultimate power over the person who is in Christ. If you are haunted by guilt over the past, confess it to God today, receive His forgiveness, and take one tangible step of new life: break an old sinful habit, ask for forgiveness, or begin every morning with a prayer for the strength to live as a new creation.
