How long will our ascension take during the Second Coming?
The Bible does not state the duration of the ascension of the saved, but it clearly promises its reality, joy, and culmination: eternal life with Christ. On the day of the Second Coming, the most important thing will not be the distance or the number of minutes traveled to heaven, but the personal encounter with the Savior who comes to take His people home.
The question of how long our ascension will take is entirely natural. People want to envision the events of the glorious return of Jesus Christ: the resurrection of the righteous dead, the transformation of the living saints, and the ascent to meet the Lord. However, Scripture does not provide a timeline or duration for this journey. It reveals what is far more important: Christ will come visibly, His faithful will be changed, and separation from Him will never happen again.
The ascension will take place during Christ’s visible coming
The Apostle Paul describes the sequence of events. Jesus Himself will descend from heaven, the dead in Christ will rise first, and then all the saved will be caught up together in the clouds to meet Him. This is not a secret disappearance of isolated individuals, nor is it a symbolic experience, but a worldwide, glorious, and physical event.
“For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God; and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. So we will be with the Lord forever.” 1 Thess 4:16–17
The words “together with them” are especially comforting. God’s faithful will not embark on eternity alone. Families separated by death and God’s people of all generations will be united in the presence of the Savior. Thus, the ascension is not merely a transfer from earth to heaven, but a triumphant reunion of the redeemed with their Lord.
The transformation of the body will be instantaneous
When it comes to the element of time, the Bible gives one very specific answer: the transformation of the mortal body into an immortal one will happen in an instant. This means that by God’s power, without any prolonged process of healing, aging, or physical weariness, His children will be restored to perfection.
“in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.” 1 Cor 15:52
The phrase “in the twinkling of an eye” refers primarily to the transformation itself, rather than to the exact duration of the flight or journey to God’s throne. Scripture does not say, “The ascension will take such-and-such amount of time.” Therefore, Christians should not turn the Bible’s silence into a subject of precise speculation. Where God has not given numbers, it is best for us to maintain humility.
Why the exact duration is not revealed
God often reveals enough to strengthen our faith and prepare our hearts, but He does not satisfy every human curiosity. We are told Who is coming, for whom He is coming, and what the outcome of His coming will be. But we are not given a timetable of the final moments or the duration of each phase of this heavenly celebration.
Jesus emphasized that His return would be obvious to all, like lightning visible across the entire sky.
“For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.” Matt 24:27
For Seventh-day Adventists, this truth is especially vital: Christ’s Second Coming will be literal, personal, visible, and audible. It is not a hidden spiritual event. Yet the heart of prophecy is not to satisfy curiosity about travel details, but to call us to be ready to meet the King.
We will depart in glorified bodies and without fear
Even though the exact duration of the ascension is unknown to us, we know its character. The redeemed will not be frail, frightened, or lost in the vastness of space. Christ will transform their bodies to be like His own glorious body.
“He will transform our humble bodies so that they will be conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to make all things subject to himself.” Phil 3:21
Ellen White, in the book The Great Controversy, describes this moment as a time when the living righteous are glorified, and the resurrected saints ascend together to meet their Lord. Her emphasis, like that of Scripture, is placed not on calculating the length of the journey, but on the majesty of Christ, the joy of deliverance, and the ultimate victory over death.
The most important truth: “We will be with the Lord forever”
The shortest and most profound answer to the question about the ascension is found at the end of Paul’s description: the saved will be with Christ forever. We may not know how long the journey takes, but we know its destination. It will not be a journey into the unknown, but a homecoming to a loving Savior.
“Therefore encourage one another with these words.” 1 Thess 4:18
Therefore, the practical question for us today is not merely “how long will it take?”, but “am I ready to meet Jesus?”. Receive His salvation daily by faith, build a character in obedience to God’s Word, be reconciled with others, and share the hope of His coming. Then the day of ascension will not be a frightening mystery, but a joyful meeting with the One we love and have long awaited.
