How is the gift of prophecy manifested in the church before the Second Coming of Christ?
The gift of prophecy is a biblical sign of God's end-time church. It does not replace the Bible, nor does it exalt human beings; rather, it directs believers to Jesus Christ, His Word, and readiness for the Second Coming.
“The Testimony of Jesus” and the Spirit of Prophecy
In Revelation, an angel refuses worship because worship belongs to God alone. At the same time, he explains an important characteristic of God's people: the “testimony of Jesus” is connected to the spirit of prophecy.
“I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” Rev 19:10
The phrase “the spirit of prophecy” refers to the working of the Holy Spirit, who imparts prophetic messages. Prophecy is not merely the prediction of the future. It is God's word given for instruction, rebuke, comfort, and the spiritual strengthening of the church. The genuine prophetic gift always glorifies Christ, upholds biblical truth, and calls for faithfulness to God.
A Mark of the Remnant Church
Revelation describes a people who stand against the dragon in the final spiritual conflict. This people is distinguished by obedience to God's commandments and the possession of the testimony of Jesus.
“And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” Rev 12:17
In light of Revelation 19:10, Seventh-day Adventists understand the “testimony of Jesus” as the manifestation of the gift of prophecy within the remnant church. Thus, God does not withdraw His spiritual gifts prior to Christ's return. On the contrary, as religious deception and moral darkness increase, the church stands in special need of clear biblical guidance.
The Apostle Paul also shows that the church awaits the coming of Jesus without lacking spiritual gifts.
“So that you come short in no gift, eagerly waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Cor 1:7
This includes the gift of prophecy. It is needed not as a new source of salvation, but as one of the ways by which Christ cares for His people.
Revelation 10 and the Mission to Prophesy Again
The tenth chapter of Revelation presents a symbolic scene of a little book that is sweet in the mouth but bitter in the stomach. The Adventist understanding connects this image with the great expectation of Christ's return in the 19th century, the joy of unlocking the prophecies of Daniel, and the subsequent bitter disappointment of 1844. Yet this disappointment did not mark the end of God's movement.
“And he said to me, ‘You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, tongues, and kings.’” Rev 10:11
This text speaks primarily of a renewed, worldwide proclamation of God's message. One should not assert that “eating the book” literally means the selection of a prophet; the passage itself does not explicitly state this. However, it demonstrates that after a bitter experience, God's people receive a new commission: to prophesy again, meaning to carry a prophetic message to the world.
The Prophetic Gift and the Ministry of Ellen White
The Seventh-day Adventist Church believes that the ministry of Ellen White was a manifestation of the biblical gift of prophecy. Her writings do not add new books to the Holy Scriptures, nor do they stand above the Bible. The Bible remains the supreme and ultimate standard of faith and practice. Ellen White's writings guide the reader to the Scriptures, emphasizing salvation by grace through Christ, holiness of life, the importance of mission, and the nearness of His return.
The Bible urges us not to despise prophecies, but neither should we accept every spiritual claim without testing it.
“Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good.” 1 Thess 5:20-21
Therefore, the authenticity of a prophetic ministry is tested by its faithfulness to God's Word, its fruits in life, its exaltation of Jesus, and its harmony with biblical teaching.
Conclusion and Practical Application
Before the Second Coming, Christ does not leave His church without spiritual guidance. According to Revelation, God's end-time people possess “the testimony of Jesus,” which is the spirit of prophecy. This gift is intended not to distract from the Savior, but to lead to Him, to strengthen trust in the Bible, and to prepare people for eternity.
In practical terms, this means: study the Holy Scriptures daily, test every spiritual teaching by the Bible, pray for the discernment of the Holy Spirit, and let the prophetic message lead you into deeper obedience to Christ and active participation in proclaiming the Gospel.
