When will the marriage of the Lamb take place?
The "spiritual wedding ceremony" of Christ and His bride is linked to the heavenly consummation of God's plan of salvation prior to the visible Second Coming. However, the marriage supper, the joyful gathering of all the redeemed with Christ, will take place after He comes to take His people home.
The imagery of marriage in the Bible speaks of love, faithfulness, and the covenant between Christ and the Church. Jesus is called the Bridegroom, and His faithful followers are presented as the bride. This is not an earthly wedding in the literal sense, but a majestic spiritual reality: Christ definitively receives His kingdom and prepares the redeemed for eternal life with Him.
The marriage of the Lamb precedes Christ's glorious coming
The Book of Revelation reveals that the bride has already made herself ready when the marriage of the Lamb arrives. Immediately following this, John sees Christ going forth as King of kings for the final victory over the forces of evil. Therefore, the biblical sequence shows that the heavenly wedding phase precedes Jesus' visible return to the earth.
“Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.” Rev 19:7
“Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True… And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.” Rev 19:11, 16
This does not mean that God's children remain separated from Christ. They belong to Him even now through faith. However, the final vindication of God's people, the close of the heavenly judgment, and Christ's reception of His kingdom take place prior to His return in glory.
What does it mean that “His bride has made herself ready”?
The readiness of the bride is not an attempt to earn salvation through one's own good works. The Church cannot cleanse itself from sin. Christ Himself loves, forgives, sanctifies, and clothes His people in His righteousness. Yet, genuine faith always responds to His grace with repentance, trust, and obedience.
“Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.” Eph 5:25–27
The bride's fine linen symbolizes not human self-righteousness, but a righteous life born of union with Christ. He saves us by grace; we abide in His love and allow the Holy Spirit to transform our character.
The heavenly marriage and the reception of the kingdom
The Adventist understanding of prophecy draws special attention to Daniel's vision. The Son of Man does not come from heaven to earth, but goes to the Ancient of Days, to the Father in the heavenly judgment. There He is given dominion, glory, and a kingdom. This helps us understand the spiritual aspect of the "marriage": the Bridegroom receives the kingdom to which His redeemed people belong.
“I was watching in the night visions, and behold, One like the Son of Man, coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days… Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him.” Dan 7:13–14
Ellen White explained this imagery in connection with the parable of the ten virgins: the coming of the Bridegroom represents Christ's coming before the Father to receive the kingdom, not His visible descent to the earth. This calls not for date-setting, but for spiritual vigilance.
When will the marriage supper take place?
After Jesus returns, all the redeemed will be gathered to Him. Then the fullness of joy will arrive, which Revelation calls the marriage supper of the Lamb. Christ will come not only as Judge and King, but to be with His people forever.
“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.” 1 Thess 4:16–17
“Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!” Rev 19:9
Living in readiness today
The exact day of the heavenly marriage and the Second Coming has not been revealed to humanity. Yet Christ has revealed what His people should be: faithful, spiritually alert, cleansed by His grace, and filled with love. The practical application is simple: renew your personal covenant with Jesus daily in prayer, study God's Word, receive His forgiveness, and demonstrate your faith through obedience. Then waiting for the Bridegroom will not be a matter of fear, but a joyful hope of our eternal meeting with Him.
