What Does the Title “Son of God” Mean?
Jesus is the Son of God not because He was created or once began to exist. This title reveals His unique and eternal relationship with the Father, as well as His full Divinity.
The phrase “Son of God” sometimes raises questions: does it mean that God the Father literally gave birth to Jesus, just as an earthly father fathers a child? The biblical answer requires careful attention. Jesus Christ is indeed called the Son, and He was truly born into the world as a human being through Mary. However, His birth in Bethlehem was not the beginning of His existence. The Son of God is eternal God; He is not a creation and does not belong to created beings.
The Son of God Existed from All Eternity
The Gospel of John begins not with Bethlehem, but with eternity. Jesus is called the Word, Who was already with God and at the same time was God. This means that Christ possessed a Divine nature even before the creation of the world.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1
John further explains that all created things came into being through Him. Consequently, Christ could not have been created, for He is the Creator of everything that has a beginning.
“All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” John 1:3
Jesus Himself spoke of the glory He shared with the Father “before the world was.” His earthly life began at a specific moment in history, but His Divine existence has no beginning.
“And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.” John 17:5
What Does the Title “Son” Mean?
In the Bible, the words “Father” and “Son” help us see the real, perfect, and eternal relationship between the Persons of the Godhead. The Father is not the Son, and the Son is not the Father; yet They are one in Divine nature, glory, love, and authority. The title “Son” does not make Jesus a lesser God. On the contrary, it testifies to His singular unity with the Father.
When Jesus referred to God as His Father in a unique sense, His listeners understood that He was claiming equality with God.
“Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.” John 5:18
The Apostle Paul also speaks of Christ as the perfect revelation of the invisible God. In Him we behold not merely a prophet, an angel, or the highest of creatures, but God Himself, Who came to humanity.
“For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.” Col 2:9
Was Jesus “Only Begotten”?
In some translations, Jesus is called the “Only Begotten Son.” This word should not be understood as claiming that the Father created the Son or brought Him into existence in the past. The biblical meaning of this term highlights the uniqueness of Christ: He is the one-of-a-kind, incomparable Son of the Father and the One Who reveals Him to humanity in the most perfect way.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
At the same time, believers can also be called children of God—through faith, adoption, and grace. Yet Jesus is the Son in an entirely unique sense: He did not become the Son of God through conversion or adoption. He is the eternal Son Who came to make us children of God.
“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.” John 1:12
Jesus Was Truly Born as a Human Being
Although Christ has no beginning as God, He willingly took upon Himself human nature. The Holy Spirit performed the miracle of the incarnation in Mary’s womb, and for this reason the Child born was called the Son of God. This speaks of His supernatural earthly birth, not of the creation of His Divine nature.
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.” Luke 1:35
John expresses this truth with special clarity: the eternal Word “became flesh.” It was not a man who gradually became God, but the eternal God the Son Who took on genuine human nature without ceasing to be God.
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14
Ellen White emphasized that in Christ “is life, original, unborrowed, underived.” This aligns fully with the biblical witness: Jesus did not receive His Divinity from creation, nor is He inferior to the Father in His nature.
Why Is This Important for Salvation?
If Christ were merely an exalted created being, He could not fully reveal God nor offer a perfect sacrifice for the sins of the world. But Jesus is truly God and truly Man. As God, He possesses the authority to grant eternal life; as Man, He drew near to us, experienced temptations, and died in our place.
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Heb 13:8
Therefore, the title “Son of God” does not mean “created by God” or “one who once did not exist.” It proclaims that Jesus Christ is the eternal, unique Son of the Father, equal to Him in Divinity, Who was born into our world for our salvation. In practical terms, this means: trust Jesus completely. He is not merely a moral teacher, but God Who knows you, loves you, and has the power to forgive, transform, and lead you into eternal life.
